An estate, since 1892

A family-owned property, now in its fifth generation, on the western shore of Lake Garda.

About

An estate, since 1892.

Verenza is a family-owned estate, now in its fifth generation. The land has changed surprisingly little since 1892. The family who runs it, less so. We are slow to change, careful to preserve, and unhurried by anyone’s definition of progress that is not also our own.

Our story

Five generations on a promontory.

Conte Marco Verenza built the original villa in 1892 as a private retreat. His grandson opened it as an inn after the second world war. His great-granddaughter, Cecilia Verenza-Maranta, runs the estate today, alongside her brother Giovanni.

The land has been farmed by the same six families for the better part of a century. Three of the chefs grew up in the village. The head gardener was born on the property.

Sustainability

Quietly, for a long time.

The estate has been carbon-neutral since 2019, drawing power from the lake and the south-facing terraces. Eighty per cent of what is served on the table grows on the estate; the remainder travels less than fifty kilometres.

The 1903 cellars run without refrigeration. The thermal pools are heated by the same spring that has fed them for 138 years. We do not advertise these things. We mention them only when asked.

“What sets Verenza apart is not what it has built. It is what it has refused to build.” — Architectural Digest, 2023
